Greatness of God

by Cailey Stoerner

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.”

Isaiah 40:28

As I am sitting on my patio this morning before work, it is pitch black outside. The world outside of my patio is still and quiet, not yet awake. The birds aren’t up singing their songs and there aren’t cars and trucks driving by. The only sounds that are heard at this hour is the rustling of the wind in the trees and, (since I live on a farm) the sound of sprinkler motors running, providing the needed water for the crops to grow.

As I sit in this unfamiliar quiet, a quiet that is not experienced during waking hours, I am consumed by the greatness of our God.

Our God is constantly at work, even when we are tucked in our beds and the rest of the world is asleep. He is constantly working all things out for the good of each of us. When I really think about what this looks like, it is quite an exhausting feat He has to accomplish 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just thinking about my personal to-do list for one day seems overwhelming enough, yet He is meeting the needs and working everything out for the to-do list of every single person on this earth at the same time. WOW! It is mind-blowing.

To add to this awesomeness, He isn’t just working things out on our behalf haphazardly or mediocrely. He is doing it with great detail and agape love; a love that is unconditional and undeserved. So even when we aren’t living our lives as He would want, lives that aren’t reflective of Jesus, He doesn’t just get mad at us and stop helping us. He is still there, always working things out on our behalf!

Another aspect of the greatness of God that I came to realize on the quiet patio was that even though I was sitting all by myself, I truly wasn’t alone. I heard the rustling of the wind, but I couldn’t see the wind. It is the same with God! I couldn’t see Him, but God was with me, listening to my prayers and thoughts. One of God’s greatest desires for us is to have a relationship with us. He wants to be our BFF, Best Friend Forever. He is the only friend that will still love us when we say or do the wrong thing. He is the only friend that will always answer the call, even in the middle of the night. He is the only friend that won’t betray us or give up on us.

It is said that you are who you hang out with. I need and want to hang out with God more, so my life can be more reflective of His: goodness, kindness, gentleness, and abounding in steadfast love. I need to lean in and trust this never-ending and never-failing friendship.

As I continued to sit on my patio, the world around me started to awaken. The birds started to sing their songs, a few people were on the road heading to a desired destination, and sunlight started to pierce the dark sky. Watching the sunrise, I felt as if I had a front row seat watching an artist create a masterpiece in real time. I sat there awestruck by the beauty that was surrounding me. Our God is the ultimate artist! He creates so much beauty all around us each and every day that if we will just take the time to quiet our minds and be still, we can experience His great masterpieces.

This patio time, where I sat in the quiet, making an active effort to experience the greatness of our God I was awestruck and filled with so much gratitude. I am so thankful that I have a God who loves me no matter what. A God who is always working things out on my behalf, never leaves me, is always a prayer away, and creates beauty that I can experience daily if I take the time to do it! When our minds shift from a place of just being or surviving to a place of gratitude, it can change the entire outlook and outcome of our day.

So my challenge for you is to take some time today, find a special place, quiet your mind from the distractions of this world, be still, and experience the greatness of our God. Be consumed by the greatness of God, reflect on all you can be grateful for, and see how your day and possibly your life can change!
